The blue warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on or when the engine is started.

If it turns red, stop and let the engine run at idle speed for a minute or two.

The temperature should decrease and the warning light should go out or appear blue. Otherwise, stop the engine. Let it cool before checking the coolant level.
