Renault Boreal
Windscreen wiper and washer
Vehicle fitted with intermittent windscreen wipers
- A.
Single sweep of wipers
A brief pull triggers a single sweep of the wipers.
- B.
switched off
- C.
intermittent wiping
The wipers will pause for several seconds between sweeps.
Depending on the vehicle, the interval between sweeps can be changed by rotating the ring 2.
- D.
normal wiping speed
- E.
fast continuous wiping
Special feature
While the vehicle is being driven, the wiping speed slows down whenever the vehicle stops. For example, fast wiping speed will slow to normal wiping speed. As soon as the vehicle moves off, wiping will return to the speed originally selected.
Any action on stalk 1 overrides and cancels the automatic function.
Note: when washing the vehicle using a car wash, return ring 2 of stalk 1 to the off position to wiper operation.
Note: after use, remember to return ring 2 of stalk 1 to the off position to ensure that wiper operation is not automatically activated on the next use.
Vehicle fitted with windscreen wiper rain sensor
The rain sensor is located in the windscreen, in front of the internal rear-view mirror.
- A.
Single sweep of wipers
A brief pull triggers a single sweep of the wipers.
- B.
switched off
- C.
Auto wiper function (depending on vehicle)
When this position is selected, the system detects water on the windscreen and triggers the wipers at a suitable wiping speed.
It is possible to change the triggering threshold and the time between sweeps by turning ring 2:
- F: minimum sensitivity;
- G: maximum sensitivity.
The greater the sensitivity, the quicker the wipers react and the faster they sweep.
When automatic screen wiping is activated or the sensitivity is increased, the wipers will sweep once.
Note:
- the rain sensor is simply a driver aid. In reduced visibility, the driver must trigger the wipers manually. In foggy or snowy conditions, the wipers will not be triggered automatically but must be controlled by the driver;
- In cold conditions when the temperature is below zero, the automatic wiper function will not be activated when the vehicle is started. It is triggered automatically when the vehicle reaches a speed of approximately 5 mph (8 km/h).
- Do not trigger the automatic wiper in dry weather.
- completely remove any ice from the windscreen before triggering the automatic wiping function;
- When washing the vehicle under a track-type car washer, set stalk 1 to position B to disable automatic wiping.
If your vehicle is equipped with a vehicle settings configuration menu, you can activate or deactivate function Vehicle settings customisation menu.
For vehicles not equipped with a settings customisation menu, you may choose to have this function deactivated by an Approved Dealer.
Operating faults
If automatic wiping becomes faulty, the wiper returns to intermittent wiping. Please contact an authorised dealer.
The rain sensor may stop operating when:
- the wiper blades are damaged: a layer of water or streaks on the windscreen in the sensor detection zone may increase the response time of the automatic wiper or increase the wiper frequency;
- a windscreen with any chips or cracks near the sensor or a windscreen covered in dust, dirt, insects, ice, the use of washing wax and water-repellent chemicals. In this case, the windscreen wiper will be less sensitive or may not even react.

Precautions
- In icy weather, check that the wiper blades are not stuck to the windscreen before triggering the wipers. If you trigger the wipers while the blades are stuck because of ice, there is a risk of damaging the blades and the windscreen wiper motor.
- Do not use the wipers on a dry windscreen. This will damage the wipers or wear them out prematurely.
Windscreen wiper position for servicing.
This position allows the blades to be removed from the windscreen.
This can be useful when:
- cleaning the blades
- releasing the blades in the winter;
- replacing the blades Wiper blades: replacement.
With the ignition on and the engine running, lift the stalk 1 twice to position A (single sweep). The blades stop a short distance from the bonnet.
To set the wiper blades to the lowered position, with the ignition on, ensure that the wipers are folded down against the windscreen and move the stalk 1 to position A (single sweep).
Before switching on the ignition, put the blades back on the windscreen. If you fail to do this, there is a risk of damaging the bonnet or the blades when they are triggered.
warning
Before doing anything involving the windscreen (washing the vehicle, de-icing, cleaning the windscreen, etc.), return the stalk 1 to position B (off).
Risk of injury and/or damage.
tip
If the windscreen is obstructed (by dirt, snow, ice, etc.), clean it (including the area in front of the internal rear view mirror) before triggering the windscreen wipers, as there is a risk of the motor overheating.
If there is an object stopping the wiper blade from moving, it may stop operating. Remove the obstacle and trigger the wiper using the stalk.
Windscreen wiper
With the ignition on, pull the lever 1 and then release it.
A longer pull will trigger the windscreen washer, followed by two sweeps of the wipers and, a few seconds later, a third sweep.
Note: when the temperature is below zero, there is a risk that the washer fluid will freeze on the windscreen, reducing visibility. Heat the windscreen with the demister before using the wipers.
warning
When carrying out maintenance in the engine compartment, ensure that the windscreen wiper stalk is in position B (park).
Risk of injury.
tip
Efficiency of a wiper blade
Inspect the condition of the blades How long they will last depends on the conditions of use:
- they should be kept clean: clean the blades and the windscreen regularly with soap and water;
- do not use them when the windscreen is dry;
- pull them away from the windscreen when they have not been used for a long time.
In all situations, replace them as soon as they start to become less effective: approximately once a year Wiper blades: replacement.
Precautions when using the wipers
- In freezing or snowy weather, clear the windscreen before starting the wipers (risk of the motor overheating);
- check that the path of the blades is not obstructed.
Rear windscreen washer and wiper
Rear windscreen wiper
-
With the ignition on, rotate the ring 3 on the stalk 1 until the symbol is opposite the mark 2.
- off
- intermittent wiping
The wipers will pause for several seconds between sweeps. The wiping frequency varies according to the vehicle speed;
- slow continuous wiping
To stop the operation, rotate the ring 3 again.
Note:
When washing using a roller type car wash, return the ring 3 on the stalk 1 to the stop position to deactivate wiping.
Note:
At the end of use, remember to return the ring 3 on stalk 1 to the off position, so that wiping is not inadvertently activated during the next use.
tip
Do not use the wiper arm to open or close .
warning
Before taking any action involving the rear screen (washing the vehicle, de-icing, cleaning, etc.) return the stalk 1 to the off position.
Risk of injury and/or damage.
tip
Efficiency of a wiper blade
Check the condition of the wiper blades. How long they last depends on you:
- it must remain clean: clean the blade and the screen regularly with soapy water;
- do not use it when the screen is dry;
- free it from the screen when it has not been used for a long time.
In all cases, replace it as soon as it begins to lose efficiency: approximately once a year Wiper blades: replacement.
Precaution for using the wipers
- In freezing or snowy conditions, clear the screen before starting the wipers (risk of motor overheating);
- ensure that no objects are obstructing the travel of the blade.
Activation/deactivation of the rear screen wiper
Engaging reverse gear triggers intermittent wiping (if the front wipers are in operation). If your vehicle is equipped with a vehicle settings customisation menu, you can choose to activate or deactivate the function .
For vehicles not fitted with a settings customisation menu, you can have this function deactivated by an authorised dealer.
In the event of obstacles present on the rear window (dirt, snow, etc.), the wiper will try to sweep away all the obstacles. If an obstacle prevents the blade from moving, it can be stopped. Remove the obstacle, wait for around 30 seconds and reactivate the wiper using the wiper stalk.
Precautions
- In the event of ice, check that the blades are not stuck to the windscreen before operating the wipers. If you activate the wiper while the blade is blocked by ice, you risk damaging both the blade and the wiping motor.
- Do not operate the wipers on a dry screen. This will lead to the premature wear or damage to the blades.
Rear screen wash/wipe
-
With the ignition on, push and hold the stalk 1 then release it.
Holding the stalk for longer will trigger (in addition to the windscreen washer) two sweeps of the wipers followed, a few seconds later, by a third (drip wiping function).
When the stalk is released, it returns to the rear wipe position.
