Renault Kardian Latam

Using information from a camera, the adaptive cruise control function gives you the option to maintain a selected speed, known as the cruising speed, while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front in the same lane.

The system controls the acceleration and deceleration of your vehicle using the engine and braking system.

The maximum range of the system is approximately 150 m. This may vary depending on road conditions (ground relief, weather conditions, etc.)

The adaptive cruise control function is available between 16 mph (25 km/h) and 99 mph (160 km/h), depending on road conditions (traffic, weather, etc.).

The function is indicated by the symbol.

Note:

  • The driver must respect the maximum speed limit and safety distances in the country where they are driving;
  • The adaptive cruise control can brake the vehicle to up to one-third of the braking capacity. Depending on the situation, the driver may need to brake more intensely.
tip

The adaptive cruise control function does not trigger an emergency stop and its braking capability is limited.

warning

This function is an additional driving aid. Under no circumstances can it substitute the driver's responsibility to respect speed limits and safety distances.

The driver must keep control of the vehicle at all times. The driver must always adapt their speed according to the environment and traffic conditions. The adaptive cruise control must only be used on motorways (or dual carriageways). The cruise control should not be used in heavy traffic or on winding or slippery roads (ice, aquaplaning, gravel) or in adverse weather conditions (fog, rain, crosswinds, etc.). Risk of accident.

warning

To ensure that the system operates correctly, the camera area must be kept clean and not modified.

Switching on

Activate the switch 4.

The 7 2_ALL_496_1_pictogramme.png warning light is shown in grey and, depending on the vehicle, the "Adaptive cruise control ON message appears on the instrument panel, accompanied by dashes to indicate that the cruise control function is activated and waiting to store a cruising speed.

The function cannot be used while the parking brake is applied.

The "Adaptive Cruise Ctl unavailable" message is displayed on the instrument panel.

Activating cruise control

While the vehicle is moving at a constant speed, press the switch 5 (SET/-) or 6 (RES/+) to activate the function and store the current speed. The minimum recorded cruising speed is 19 mph (30 km/h).

The cruising control 9 replaces the dashes and the cruise control is confirmed by the appearance of the cruising speed in green and the 7 2_ALL_496_1_pictogramme.png warning light.

If you try to activate the function when the vehicle speed is over 99 mph (160 km/h) or below 16 mph (25 km/h) on vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox, the "Invalid Speed" message will be displayed and the function will not be activated.

Once a cruising speed is memorised and the cruise control function is active, you may lift your foot off the accelerator pedal.

warning

Important: you must keep your feet near the pedals at all times to be prepared for any event.

Activation of the safe distance control

Once the cruise control is activated, the default safe distance 8 will be displayed in green on the instrument panel. The default safety distance corresponds to approximately two seconds (see the following pages).

Your vehicle adapts its speed to that of the vehicle in front and applies the brakes if necessary (the brake light comes on) to maintain the distance indicated on the instrument panel.

Defining the cruising speed

You can change the speed by repeatedly pressing (to decrease the speed) or by pressing and holding (to increase the speed) switch 5 or 6:

  • use the "SET/-" switch 5 to reduce the speed;
  • use the "RES/+" switch 6 to increase the speed.

Adjusting the guiding distance

You can vary the safety distance from the vehicle in front at any time by pressing switch 2 several times.

The horizontal distance meter on the instrument panel indicates the various safe distances available:

  • distance meter A: long distance (corresponding to approximately 2.4 seconds);
  • distance meter B: intermediate distance 2 (corresponding to approximately two seconds);
  • distance meter C: intermediate distance 1 (corresponding to approximately 1.6 second);
  • distance meter D: short distance (corresponding to approximately 1.2 second).

The selected distance meter appears in green on the instrument panel. The other meters are displayed in grey.

Note: the distance should be set according to the traffic, local regulation and weather conditions.

tip

The safety distance is set by default to distance meter B.

Exceeding the cruising speed

The cruising speed may be exceeded at any time by pressing the accelerator pedal.

If it is exceeded, the cruising speed 9 appears in red.

Then release the accelerator pedal: the cruise control and safe distance control will automatically resume the speed and distance instructions you selected earlier.

The distance meter flashes if the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front is less than the selected safety distance: the safe distance control function is no longer active.

Overtaking manoeuvre

If you wish to overtake the vehicle in front, activating the direction indicator will temporarily cancel the safe distance control and enable sufficient acceleration to complete the overtaking procedure.

Putting the function on standby

You can put the function on standby by:

  • pressing the switch 3 (0);
  • pressing the brake pedal while the vehicle is moving.

The function is deactivated by the system if:

  • You set the automatic gearbox to P or N;
  • you engage the reverse gear;
  • the driver's seat belt is unfastened;
  • you open one of the opening elements:
  • the slope is very steep;
  • the vehicle speed is above 99 mph (160 km/h) or below 12 mph (20 km/h);
  • Certain driving aids and correction devices are activated (active emergency braking, ABS, ESC).

In all circumstances, standby mode is confirmed when the warning lights appear in grey and the "Adaptive Cruise Ctl deactivated" message is displayed on the instrument panel.

warning

Putting the adaptive cruise control on standby or switching it off does not trigger a quick reduction in speed: if necessary, you must brake using the brake pedal.

Exit standby mode

From the stored cruising speed

If a speed is memorised, it can be recalled, once you are sure that the road conditions are suitable (traffic, road surface, weather conditions, etc.). Press the switch 6 (RES/+) within the range of confirmed speeds.

When the stored speed is recalled, activation of the cruise control is confirmed by the appearance of the cruising speed warning light in green.

Note: if the stored speed is higher than the current speed, the vehicle will accelerate until this speed is reached.

From the current speed

When the cruise control is in standby mode, pressing the switch 5 (SET/-) reactivates the cruise control function, which will use the current vehicle speed and not take into account the previously set speed.

"Take control of the vehicle" warnings

In some situations (e.g. coming to a much slower vehicle, vehicle in front changing lanes quickly, etc.), the system may not have time to react.

Depending on the situation, the system emits a beep associated with:

  • the orange alert E if the situation requires the driver's attention;

or

  • the red alert F accompanied by the "Brake" message if the situation requires the driver's immediate attention.

In all situations, react in an appropriate manner and perform the appropriate manoeuvres.

Switching off the function

The adaptive cruise control function is deactivated when you press switch 4.

The warning light 2_ALL_496_1_pictogramme.png disappears from the instrument panel to confirm that the function is not activated.

Temporary unavailability

The camera is capable of detecting vehicles in front of your vehicle. The system cannot operate properly if the camera detection area is obscured or if its signal is interrupted.

If the camera detection area is obstructed or the camera signal is interrupted, the "Camera Radar no Visibility" message will be displayed on the instrument panel and the adaptive cruise control function will be interrupted. The green 2_ALL_496_1_pictogramme.png warning light disappears to confirm that the function has been automatically deactivated.

Make sure the camera area is not obstructed (by dirt, mud, snow), impacted, modified (including paintwork) or hidden by any accessory installed at the front of the vehicle.

Conditions in certain geographical areas may impair the function, for example:

  • arid areas, tunnels, long bridges or unused roads without lanes, without a signal, or with trees around;
  • in the vicinity of a military zone or airport.

You must leave these areas in order for the function to work.

In all cases, if the message does not go out after a new engine start, contact an approved dealer.

Operating Faults

If an operational fault is detected in one or more system components, the adaptive cruise control function will be interrupted.

Depending on the type of malfunction, the 1_ALL_036_1_pictogramme.png warning light appears on the instrument panel along with the following message:

  • Check Camera/Radar” ;
  • Check vehicle”.

consult an approved dealer.

System operating limits

12048_XJFLAT_012_1_image.jpeg

Vehicle detection

The system only detects vehicles (cars, lorries, motorcycles) that are moving in the same direction as your vehicle.

A vehicle entering the same lane (example G) will only be detected by the system once it enters the camera detection areas.

The system may activate braking abruptly or with a delay.

The system cannot detect:

  • vehicles arriving at intersections: access roads (e.g. H), etc.;
  • vehicles being driven on the wrong side of the road or reversing towards you.
tip

The adaptive cruise control must only be used on motorways (or dual carriageways).

12048_XJFLAT_013_1_image.jpeg

Detection on bends

When the vehicle enters a bend or corner, the camera may be temporarily unable to detect the vehicle in front (example J)

The system may trigger an acceleration.

When you exit a bend, the system's detection of the vehicle in front may be impaired or delayed.

The system may activate braking abruptly or with a delay.

Detection of vehicles in adjacent lanes

The system can detect vehicles moving in an adjacent lane when:

  • you are driving on a bend (e.g. K);
  • you are driving on a road with narrow lanes;
  • the speed of the vehicle in the adjacent lane is slower and one of these vehicles is located very close to the lane in which the other vehicle is moving.

The system may incorrectly trigger the deceleration or braking of the vehicle.

12048_XJFLAT_014_1_image.jpeg

Vehicles concealed by variations in ground relief

The system will not register vehicles moving up or down slopes when hidden by the terrain or located outside of the camera detection areas.

Vehicles outside of the camera detection areas

The system will react late or not at all if detected vehicles are outside of the camera detection areas, especially in the following cases:

  • vehicles carrying long objects that cross the line;
  • the actual length of tall vehicles (example L) is outside the camera detection area (construction machinery, agricultural equipment towing vehicle, etc.);
  • vehicles insufficiently centred in the lane;
  • narrow vehicles that are too close to one another (e.g. M)

12048_XJFLAT_005_1_image.jpeg

Stationary and slow vehicles

When your vehicle speed is over approximately 31 mph (50 km/h), the system does not detect:

  • stationary vehicles (e.g. N);
  • very slow vehicles.

When your speed is less than approximately 31 mph (50 km/h), the system may not react or may react very late to:

  • stationary vehicles (e.g. N);
  • very slow vehicles;

  • vehicles in front12 that change lane, revealing a stationary vehicle 13 (e.g. P).
tip

Always be ready to take control of your vehicle when faced with stationary or very slow-moving vehicles (e.g. N)

The adaptive cruise control function does not trigger an emergency stop and its braking capability is limited.

Non-detection of fixed obstacles and small objects

The system cannot detect:

  • pedestrians, bicycles, scooters, etc.;
  • animals;
  • fixed obstacles (toll barriers, walls, etc.) (e.g. Q).

These are not taken into account by the system. They do not trigger any alerts or reactions from the system.

Detection of vehicles entering the lane at high speed

If your vehicle is overtaken by another vehicle at high speed 14 (motorcycle, car, etc.) and the vehicle is temporarily located between your vehicle and the vehicle in front 15, the system may trigger undue acceleration, deceleration or braking.

Warnings

warning

This function is an additional driving aid. Under no circumstances can it substitute the driver's responsibility to respect speed limits and safety distances.

The driver must keep control of the vehicle at all times.

The driver should always drive at a speed appropriate to the driving conditions and surroundings, irrespective of the system warnings.

With the exception of lane dividing lines, the traffic indicators (traffic lights, signals, pedestrian crossings, etc.) are not recognised by the system. They do not trigger any alerts or reactions from the system.

Under no circumstances should the system be used to detect obstacles or as an anti-collision system.

The adaptive cruise control must only be used on motorways (or dual carriageways).

System repairs/maintenance

  • If the car is involved in a collision, the camera may be misaligned and this could affect its operation. Deactivate the system and consult an approved dealer.
  • Any work in the area where the camera is located (replacements, repairs) must be carried out by a qualified professional.

Only an approved dealer is fully certified to carry out system maintenance.

Disabling the feature

You should deactivate the function if:

  • the vehicle is travelling on a winding road;
  • the vehicle is being towed (breakdown recovery);
  • the vehicle is towing a trailer;
  • the vehicle is being driven in a tunnel or near a metallic structure;
  • the vehicle arrives at a toll booth, a motorway service station or a narrow road;
  • the vehicle is being driven up or down a very steep slope;
  • the vehicle is being driven on slippery ground (rain, snow, gravel, etc.);
  • weather conditions are bad (rain, snow, crosswinds, etc.);
  • the camera area has been damaged (impacts, etc.).

Speak to your approved dealer if you notice any abnormal behaviour.

warning

In the case of systemic problems

The system may be affected or damaged by some conditions, such as:

  • the camera area is obstructed (by dirt, ice, snow, condensation, etc.);
  • a complex environment (tunnel, etc.);
  • adverse weather conditions (snow, heavy rain, hail, black ice, etc.);
  • the road is narrow, winding or undulating (sharp curves, etc.);
  • a slower vehicle moving at a significantly different speed;
  • using floor mats that are not adapted to the vehicle. On the driver's side, only use mats suitable for the vehicle, attached with the pre-fitted components, and check the fitting regularly. Do not lay several mats on top of each other. There is a risk of wedging the pedals

In these cases, the system may be incorrectly triggered.

Risk of unwanted braking or acceleration.

Many unforeseen situations may affect the operation of the system. Certain objects or vehicles that may appear in the camera detection zone may be interpreted by the system incorrectly, possibly leading to improper acceleration or braking.

You should always be ready for sudden events that may occur while you are driving. Always keep your vehicle under control, keeping your feet close to the pedals to prepare for any event.
