Renault Kardian Latam
Depending on the vehicle, they may consist of:
- seat belt inertia reel pretensioners;
- chest force limiters;
- airbagsfor the driver and front seat passenger.
These systems are designed to act in- dependently or together when the vehicle is subjected to a frontal impact.
Depending on the severity of the impact, the system may trigger:
- seat belt locking;
- the seatbelt pretensioner (which takes up any seat belt slack);
- the airbag and force limiter.
Pretensioners
The pretensioners hold the seat belt against the body, holding the occupant more securely against the seat, thus increasing the seat belt’s efficiency.
With the ignition on, in the event of sudden deceleration, the system may activate, depending on the intensity of the impact, the seat belt inertia reel pretensioner 1, which instantly retracts the seat belt.
Force limiter
Above a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit the force of the belt against the body so that it is at an acceptable level.
warning
- Have the entire restraint system checked following an accident.
- No operation whatsoever is permitted on any part of the system (airbag, electronic units, wiring) and the system components must not be reused on any other vehicle, even if identical.
- To prevent the systems from being spuriously triggered and causing injury, only qualified personnel from an Approved Dealer may service restraint systems other than the seatbelts.
- The electrical trigger system may only be tested by a specially trained technician using special equipment.
- If the vehicle is to be scrapped, contact an approved dealer for help with disposal of the gas generators of the pretensioners and the airbags.
Driver and front passenger airbags
Fitted for both front seats: driver and front passenger.
The presence of this equipment is indicated by the word "Airbag" on the steering wheel, on the dashboard (in airbag zone 1) and, depending on the vehicle, on a label affixed at the base of the windscreen.
Each airbag system consists of:
- an airbag and gas generator fitted on the steering wheel for the driver and on the dashboard for the front passenger;
- an electronic unit for system monitoring which controls the gas generator electrical trigger system;
- a single warning light
on the instrument panel; - remote sensors (depending on the vehicle).
warning
The airbag system is based on pyrotechnic principles. This explains why when the airbag inflates, it generates heat, produces smoke (this doesn't mean a fire is about to start) and makes noise. When an airbag needs to be triggered, it will inflate immediately and this can lead to superficial skin injuries or other problems.
Operation
This system is only operational when the ignition is switched on.
In the event of a severe frontal impact, the airbag(s) is or are rapidly inflated to cushion the impact of the driver's head and chest against the steering wheel and of the front passenger against the dashboard. The airbags then deflate immediately so that the passengers are not in any way prevented from leaving the vehicle.
Operating faults
This warning light appears when the engine is started and switches off after approximately three seconds.
If it does not light up when the ignition is switched on or if it stays on, this signals a system failure.
Contact your approved dealer as soon as possible.
Your protection will be reduced until this fault is rectified.
In the following situations, the pretensioners or airbags will be triggered:
In a frontal collision with a hard, uncrushable surface at a speed equal to or above 16 mph (25 km/h).
In a frontal collision with another vehicle of the same size or larger, if the area of impact is equal to or larger than 40% and the combined speed of the vehicles is equal to or above 25 mph (40 km/h).
In a side collision with a vehicle of the same size or larger, at a speed equal to or above 31 mph (50 km/h).
In the following situations, the pretensioners and airbags may be triggered:
- impact underneath the vehicle, such as with a pavement kerb;
- hitting a pothole;
- fall or hard landing;
- when hitting a rock;
- ...
In the following situations, the pretensioners and airbags may not be triggered:
- in a rear collision, regardless of how severe it is;
- when the vehicle turns over;
- ...
- in a side collision involving the front or rear of the vehicle;
- in a frontal collision underneath the rear of a lorry;
- in a frontal collision with an obstacle at an acute angle;
- ...
Operating fault
The warning light A comes on when the ignition is switched on then goes out after a few seconds.
If it does not come on when the ignition is switched on or if it comes while the engine is running, this indicates a fault with the system (airbags, pretensioners, etc.) for the front and/or rear seats.
Contact an Approved Dealer as soon as possible. Your protection will be reduced until this fault is rectified.
Warnings
The following warnings are provided to ensure that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to prevent the risk of serious injury caused by objects which may be hurled when the airbag is deployed.
warning
Warnings concerning the driver's airbag
- Never modify the steering wheel or its airbag system.
- Never cover the steering wheel airbag system.
- Do not attach any object such as a clip, badge, watch, mobile phone holder, etc., to the steering wheel boss.
- Only qualified personnel at an Authorised Dealer are permitted to remove the steering wheel.
- When driving, do not sit too close to the steering wheel: you arms should be slightly bent (see "Adjusting your driving position"). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to inflate properly.
Warnings concerning the passenger airbag
- Do not attach or affix any objects (badge, logo, watch, mobile phone holder, etc.) on the dashboard, over or near the airbag.
- Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger, such as a pets, hats, umbrellas, fishing rods, parcels, etc.
- The passenger must not put his/her feet on the dashboard or seat, as this position can lead to serious injuries being sustained. In general, all parts of the body should be kept away from the dashboard (knees, hands, head etc.).
- Reactivate the devices that protect the front seat passenger, in addition to their seat belt, as soon as a child seat is removed.
FITTING A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS PROHIBITED, UNLESS THE RESTRAINTS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELTS HAVE BEEN DEACTIVATEDChild safety: deactivating, activating the front passenger airbag.
