Renault Koleos
Depending on the vehicle, they may include:
- an anti-lock braking system (ABS);
- electronic stability control (ESC) with traction control;
- emergency brake assist;
- hill start assistance;
- hill descent control.
warning
These functions are an additional aid in the event of critical driving conditions, enabling the vehicle behaviour to be adapted to suit the driving conditions.
These functions do not take the place of the driver. They do not increase the vehicle's limits and should not encourage you to drive more quickly. Therefore, they can under no circumstances replace the vigilance or responsibility of the driver when manoeuvring the vehicle (the driver must always be ready for sudden incidents which may occur when driving).
■ Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
Under heavy braking, the ABS prevents the wheels from locking, allowing the stopping distance to be managed and keeping control of the vehicle. Under these circumstances, the vehicle can be steered to avoid an obstacle whilst braking. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
You will feel a pulsation through the brake pedal each time the system is activated. It is still essential to follow the rules of good driving practice (such as driving at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, etc.).
warning
ABS is designed to ensure your vehicle's safety and steering when braking, not to shorten stopping distances. On bumpy, gravelly, or snowy roads, stopping distances may be longer than in a vehicle without ABS. When driving on these types of roads, slow down and leave plenty of following distance, especially if you are driving at low speeds.
▶ Operating faults
If a problem occurs with the ABS system, a warning light will illuminate on the
instrument panel
and the brake system will operate
without ABS. Drive your vehicle safely to an authorized workshop as soon as
possible.
In an emergency, apply firm and continuous pressure to the brake pedal. There is no need to pump it repeatedly. The ABS will modulate the force applied in the braking system.
warning
Your braking systems are partially operational. If the ABS warning light
and the brake warning light
are both illuminated while
driving, it indicates a serious issue with the braking system. It is dangerous to
brake suddenly, and it is essential to stop immediately as soon as traffic
conditions allow and then call an approved dealer.
■ Electronic stability control (ESC)
This system helps you to keep control of the vehicle in critical driving conditions (avoiding an obstacle, loss of grip on a bend, etc.).
▶ Operating principle
A sensor in the steering wheel detects the direction selected by the driver.
Other sensors throughout the vehicle measure the actual direction.
The system compares the direction selected by the driver and the actual direction of the
vehicle and corrects this as necessary by applying the brakes selectively and/or acting
on the engine power. If the system is triggered, the
warning light flashes on the
instrument panel. You may feel a slight vibration while it is operating, which is
normal.
After starting the vehicle, noise may occur due to the initial function check of the ABS or ESC during departure, and this is normal.
▶ Traction control
This system helps to limit wheelspin of the drive wheels and to control the vehicle when pulling away, accelerating, or decelerating.
Operating principle
Using the wheel sensors, the system measures and compares the speed of the drive wheels at all times and slows down their over-rotation. If a wheel is starting to slip, the system brakes automatically until the drive supplied becomes compatible with the level of grip under the wheel again.
The system also adjusts the engine speed to the grip available under the wheels, independently of the pressure exerted on the accelerator pedal.
▶ Disabling ESC
In some situations (driving on very soft ground such as snow or mud, or driving with snow chains fitted), the system may reduce the engine power to limit wheelspin.
In this case, you can disable the ESC function to increase engine drive to make it easier to start.
You can disable the function by swiping down from top to bottom on the left side of the clock at the top of the center screen to select the [Control Center] screen, and then press the [ESC OFF] button. Multimedia equipment
You may want to disable the ESC feature in the following cases:
- When the vehicle is driving on snowy or slushy roads
- When the vehicle is stuck in a muddy area and needs to move back and forth
- When the vehicle is driving with tyre chains
You should drive with ESC enabled because driving with ESC disabled can cause your vehicle to skid on slippery surfaces or when you need to make sharp turns, and can make back roads and turns difficult to navigate.
warning
Do not disable ESC (including TCS) when the feature is engaged. The vehicle may skid abruptly, increasing the risk of an accident.
▶ Operating faults
When the system detects an operating fault, the warning lights appear on the instrument panel. Consult an approved dealer.
If your vehicle is on a rotating table or other moving object, such as at the entrance to a parking garage, while the engine is running, the ESC light may illuminate.
Restart the vehicle after the vehicle is off of the rotating table or other moving object.
■ Emergency brake assist (EBA)
This system supplements the ABS and helps reduce vehicle stopping distances.
▶ Operating principle
The system is for detecting an emergency braking situation. In this case, the braking system immediately develops maximum power and may trigger ABS control.
ABS braking is maintained as long as the brake pedal is applied.
The emergency hazard lights may activate during sudden braking, depending on the vehicle specifications.
Depending on the vehicle, these may flash in the event of sudden deceleration.
▶ Braking anticipation
Depending on the vehicle, when you rapidly release the accelerator, the system anticipates the braking manoeuvre in order to reduce stopping distances.
When using the cruise control:
- if you use the accelerator pedal when you release it, the system may be triggered;
- if you do not use the accelerator, the system will not be triggered.
▶ Operating faults
When the system detects an operating fault, the warning light is illuminated on the instrument panel. Consult an approved dealer.
warning
These features are additional aids that allow you to control the behavior of your vehicle in extreme driving situations to adapt to the driving conditions.
However, these features are not a substitute for the driver, cannot increase the performance limits of the vehicle, and cannot allow the driver to maneuver quickly. Therefore, the driver's attention or responsibility when operating the vehicle is critical in any case. The driver must always be prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise while driving.
■ Hill start assistance (HSA)
Depending on the gradient of the incline, this system assists the driver when starting on a hill. It prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards by automatically applying the brakes when the driver lifts his/her foot off the brake pedal to depress the accelerator pedal.
The system holds the vehicle for approximately 2 seconds. The brakes are then gradually released (the vehicle will move according to the slope).
If the accelerator pedal is not pressed or the electronic parking brake is not engaged, the vehicle can slide backward on an incline after approximately 2 seconds, so you should drive carefully when starting on an uphill grade.
▶ System operation
Hill-start assist is automatically activated under the following conditions.
- When the gear lever is in the D (Drive) or R (Reverse) position and climbing a hill.
- press the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a complete stop on the slope.
▶ System deactivation
The hill start assist feature is deactivated under the following conditions.
- When the gear lever is in the N (Neutral) or P (Park) position, or when driving on a flat road.
- When the ESC (Electronic stability control) system indicator light is illuminated on the dashboard.
warning
The hill start assistance system cannot completely prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards in all situations (extremely steep gradients etc.). Always drive cautiously and carefully.
In all cases, the driver may depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards, as there is a risk of serious injury.
The Hill Start Assist function should not be used for prolonged stops: use the brake pedal.
This function is not designed to immobilise the vehicle permanently.
If necessary, use the brake pedal to stop the vehicle.
The driver must remain particularly vigilant when driving on slippery or low-grip surfaces, such as icy roads, muddy terrain, or steep inclines.
Risk of serious injury.
■ Hill descent control (HDC)
By limiting engine torque and applying brakes, the vehicle can descend steep slopes at a constant speed without driver intervention.
▶ Activating/deactivating the system
Swipe down from the top left of the central screen to select the [Control center] screen, then activate or deactivate the [Hill descent control] feature. Multimedia equipment
When this feature is activated, the indicator light
on the dashboard will illuminate
in white.
After the feature is activated, automatic braking will engage when the vehicle speed is
below 40 km/h on a slope, helping to maintain a constant speed while descending. While
the hill descent control is managing the speed, the indicator light
will illuminate in green.
While driving downhill, the driver can control the descent speed by pressing the accelerator or brake pedal, with the speed adjustable in the range of approximately 4~40 km/h.
If the vehicle speed increases to approximately 40-60 km/h, the feature may be temporarily interrupted until it decreases to 4-40 km/h.
This feature can be deactivated from the central screen or will automatically deactivate if the vehicle speed exceeds 60 km/h.
The function may also be temporarily disabled in the following situations due to excessive brake temperature.
- When the hill descent control (HDC) feature is activated and the indicator light
on the dashboard illuminates
in yellow, the system will become unavailable. - When the hill descent control (HDC) feature is deactivated and the function is activated on the central screen, the indicator light on the dashboard will not illuminate, and the system will be unavailable.
warning
This feature is an additional driving assistance function.
It cannot replace the driver. Therefore, the driver is responsible for paying attention to driving and must always be ready to apply the brake.
The HDC system cannot control the vehicle speed on all steep slopes and road conditions. Please be prepared to press the brake pedal at any time to reduce speed.
Failure to do so may result in serious accidents or injuries.
