This system enables a reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started.

While driving, the system stops the engine (standby) when the vehicle is at a standstill (traffic jam, traffic lights, etc).

Conditions for engine standby

The vehicle has set off from where it was parked;

For automatic gearboxes:

  • The gearbox is in D, M or N position;

and

  • the brake pedal is pressed (sufficiently hard);

and

  • the accelerator pedal is not pressed;

and

  • the vehicle is stationary for about one second.

The engine remains on standby if position P is selected, or if position N is selected with the handbrake engaged and the brake pedal released.

For manual gearboxes:

  • The gearbox is in neutral position;

and

  • the clutch pedal is released;

If the 2_ALL_185_1_pictogramme.png warning light flashes, this indicates that the clutch pedal is not completely released;

and

  • the vehicle speed is less than approximately 2 mph (3 km/h).

For all vehicles:

The warning light 2_ALL_185_1_pictogramme.png on the instrument panel remains lit while the engine is on stand by. The vehicle equipment remain operational while the engine is stopped.

When the engine is in stand by mode, the power steering may not operate.

In this case, it will start to operate again when the engine is no longer in standby mode or if the vehicle is moving faster than approximately 1 mph (1 km/h) (e.g. on a downhill slope).

Preventing the engine from standing by

In certain situations, when crossing a junction for instance, it is possible to keep the engine running while the system is active, ready to move off quickly.

Automatic gearbox

Keep the vehicle stationary without pressing too hard on the brake pedal.

Manual gearbox

Keep the clutch pedal pressed right down.

tip

To fill with fuel, the engine must be off (and not on standby): switch off the ignition.

warning

Keep your vehicle stationary when the engine is on standby (shown by the warning light 2_ALL_185_1_pictogramme.png on the instrument panel).

Conditions for coming out of engine standby

For automatic gearboxes:

  • The brake pedal is released, D or M position is engaged, or
  • the brake pedal is released and the gear lever is in N position and the parking brake is released, or
  • the brake pedal is pressed again, with N position engaged and the parking brake applied, or
  • R position is engaged, or
  • the accelerator pedal is pressed or,
  • in manual mode, the gear lever is shifted to + or -.

For manual gearboxes:

  • The gearbox is in neutral and the clutch pedal is slightly depressed, or
  • the engine is in gear and the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

Special note: depending on the vehicle, if you switch off the ignition when the engine is on standby, the 2_ALL_064_1_pictogramme.png warning light will appear for a few seconds on the instrument panel.

Conditions preventing the standby of the engine

Certain conditions prevent the system from using the engine standby function, including when:

On card-equipped vehicles:

  • the driver's door is not closed;
  • the driver's seat belt is not fastened;

For all vehicles:

  • the reverse gear is engaged;
  • the bonnet is not locked;
  • the outside temperature is very low or very high;
  • the battery is not sufficiently charged;
  • there is too much of a difference between the vehicle interior temperature and the automatic climate control temperature;
  • the altitude is very high;
  • the Park Assist function is in operation;
  • for vehicles with automatic gearboxes, the gradient is steeper than approximately 12%;
  • The "Clear View" function is activated Automatic climate control;
  • the engine temperature is too low;
  • the anti-pollution system is regenerating;

or

  • ...

The warning light 2_ALL_186_1_pictogramme.png appears on the instrument panel to indicate that engine standby is not available.

tip

If the engine stalls while the system is in operation, pressing the clutch pedal right down will start it again.

warning

Deactivate the "Stop and Start" function in order to carry out any operation in the engine compartment.

warning

Switch off the ignition before carrying out any operation in the engine compartment Starting ignition, vehicle with keyStartup ignition, vehicle with card.

Special situations for vehicles equipped with a key

If you get out of the vehicle while the engine is on standby (traffic jam, traffic lights, etc.) a beep notifies you that the engine is on standby and has not been switched off.

tip

Special feature on key-equipped vehicles: in some of these situations, the engine will not restart automatically if a front door is open.

Special situations for vehicles equipped with a card

When the engine is on standby (e.g. traffic jam, traffic light, etc.) if the driver unfastens their seatbelt and opens their door or leaves their seat, the ignition will be switched off.

To reactivate the "Stop and Start" system, start the engine.

Special feature of the automatic engine re-start

Under certain conditions, the engine can restart on its own in order to guarantee your safety and comfort.

This can occur especially when:

  • the outside temperature is very low or very high;
  • The "Clear View" function is activated Automatic climate control;
  • the battery is not sufficiently charged;
  • the vehicle speed is above 3 mph (5 km/h) (downhill slope, etc.);
  • repeated pressing on the brake pedal or braking system requirement;
  • ...
tip

After filling with any amount of fuel, standby mode may be stopped while the electronic injection adapts.

tip

For vehicles equipped with a manual gearbox

The engine restart may be interrupted if the clutch pedal is released very rapidly when in gear.

Deactivating, activating the function

Press the switch 1 to deactivate the function. The warning light above the switch 1 lights up.

Pressing this again will reactivate the system. The warning light above the switch 1 goes out.

tip

Important note: with the engine on standby, press the switch 1 to start the engine automatically.

The system is activated automatically every time the driver starts the vehicle.

Operating fault

When the "Stop and Start" message appears on the instrument panel and the indicator light above the switch 1 appears, this indicates that the system will be deactivated.

consult an approved dealer.

warning

Before getting out of the vehicle, the engine must be switched off (and not on standby).
